What a Jute Bag Really Costs in 2026: A Line-by-Line Price Breakdown
· 6 min read · Updated
The short version
Fabric is usually the largest single line in a jute bag quote, and GSM moves it close to linearly — a 20% weight increase is roughly a 20% fabric cost increase, plus freight.
Raw jute has a government-set floor: ₹5,925 per quintal for TD-3 grade in the 2026–27 season, up ₹275 on the year. Quotes far below market usually hide a substitution.
Print is priced per colour per side for screen work, so dropping from four spot colours to two often saves more than dropping GSM.
FOB, CIF and DDP quotes are not comparable. The freight, duty and compliance costs between them frequently exceed the difference between two suppliers' factory prices.
Buyers ask for a price list. There isn't one, and any supplier who sends you a price list for custom bags is quoting a different bag from the one you want. What does exist is a stable structure — the same six or seven cost lines every time — and once you can see it you can tell which parts of a quote are genuinely movable.
Where the money actually goes
For a typical printed jute shopper at commercial volume, the cost lines fall out roughly in this order. The proportions shift with size, print complexity and run length, but the ranking rarely does.
Cost line
Typical share
What moves it
Fabric
Largest single line
GSM, blend, lamination, finished size and gusset
Cutting and stitching labour
Second
Number of operations — gussets, pockets, linings, bar tacks
Printing
Highly variable
Method, colour count, number of sides, coverage area
Handles and webbing
Moderate
Self-fabric is cheapest; rope, cane and leatherette climb sharply
Fittings and trims
Moderate
Zips, rivets, hang tags, woven labels — each is an added operation
Set-up and tooling
Fixed, amortised
Screens per colour per design, die cutting, sampling
QC, packing, export docs
Small but real
Inspection level, polybagging, carton spec
Indicative share of ex-works cost for a mid-volume printed jute shopper. Your programme will differ — this is for reading a quote, not for budgeting.
The important structural point is the sixth line. Set-up costs are fixed per design, not per bag, which is why per-unit prices fall steeply between 1,000 and 5,000 units and much more gently after that. If a quote looks expensive at low volume, set-up amortisation is usually why.
The raw material floor
Unlike most textile inputs, raw jute has a published minimum support price. The Cabinet set it at ₹5,925 per quintal for TD-3 grade for the 2026–27 season — an increase of ₹275 over the previous season's ₹5,650, and up from ₹2,400 in 2014–15. Through the first quarter of 2026 the fibre traded above the support level on reduced acreage and tight supply.
You do not need to follow the commodity, but you should know two things it implies. Jute pricing is less volatile than cotton, because the support price dampens the downside — which is one reason juco programmes, with their 25% cotton content, move more than pure hessian ones. And there is a hard floor beneath any honest quote.
Five changes that cut cost without cutting quality
Reduce colour count before reducing GSM. Screen printing is priced per colour per side. Going from four spot colours to two often saves more per unit than dropping 40 GSM, and unlike the GSM change it does not weaken the bag.
Standardise the size across the range. Three sizes sharing one fabric width cut waste at the cutting table. Three arbitrary sizes do not.
Print one side. Buyers routinely specify both sides and then use one. The second side is a full set of screens and a full pass.
Use self-fabric handles where the bag allows it. Cotton webbing, rope and cane are all significant adders. On a grocery shopper, a well-made self-jute web handle is stronger than it looks.
Consolidate the order. Set-up is per design. Four designs of 2,500 cost meaningfully more than one design of 10,000, even though the unit count is identical.
What we would not recommend cutting is lamination on a bag that will be reused weekly, or bar tacks at the handle joints. Those are the two failures customers actually notice, and a bag that fails early costs more than it saved — including in the environmental arithmetic, since the case for a reusable bag depends entirely on it being reused.
The part of the price that is not the bag
For an EU or UK importer, the factory price is often well under half of the landed cost. Sea freight, insurance, customs duty, clearance, extended producer responsibility fees and inland delivery all sit on top, and they vary by destination in ways a factory quote cannot show you.
This is why we quote DDP — delivered duty paid. The number includes everything up to your door, so it is directly comparable between suppliers and it is the number your finance team can actually budget against. If you are comparing an FOB quote with a DDP one, you are not comparing anything yet. What sits inside the landed cost on an EU import breaks the components out, and UK buyers should read what CETA changed on 15 July 2026 before budgeting duty at all.
Getting a number you can rely on
A quote is only as good as the specification behind it. Send fabric and GSM, finished size and gusset, handle type and drop, print method and colour count, fittings, quantity, and destination port. Send us those and we will come back with a DDP price — and where a cheaper route to the same result exists, we will say so.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a custom jute bag cost?
It depends almost entirely on fabric weight, finished size, print complexity and run length, which is why no honest supplier publishes a price list for custom work. A plain one-colour shopper at volume and a laminated four-colour gift bag with rope handles and a zip can differ by a factor of three for the same fabric.
Why do two suppliers quote such different prices for the same bag?
Usually because they are not quoting the same bag. The common causes are a different GSM assumed, lamination included or omitted, a different handle construction, a different colour count, or one quoting FOB while the other quotes DDP. Fix all of those in the enquiry and the spread narrows sharply.
Does a higher GSM always mean a better bag?
No. Above roughly 380 GSM the extra weight is doing marketing work rather than structural work on most shopper formats, and it adds freight cost on every unit. Weave density, handle construction and bar tacking affect real-world durability more than the last 40 GSM does.
What does DDP pricing mean?
Delivered Duty Paid — the seller covers freight, insurance, export and import clearance, duties and delivery to your named address. It is the only Incoterm where the quoted number is the landed number, which makes it the only basis on which two suppliers can be compared directly.
Do jute bag prices fall much with larger orders?
Steeply up to around 5,000 units, then much more gradually. That is because set-up costs — screens, sampling, tooling — are fixed per design and amortised across the run, so most of the benefit is captured early.
